We made a mini mock up of the cabinet.  we also figured out how to make the door fronts out of bamboo with the angled shape and did two tests on grain direction, one vertical and one horizontal.  The vertical is the strongest so I think we should go with that, plus it also communicates the shape much better.  We also did a mock up of the shelving system and how the hardware will be embedded into the shelves and mdf green wall.  We used a piece of scrap material to do it, so just know that this will be green and not the blackish wood that it is now. [ I put captions on the images below to explain things a in a bit more detail]

 

 

Shirley Ting, founder and principal architect of Heko architecture firm, called us up to help her fill out an office space she was building for Grandway Asset Management in Pasadena, CA.  We worked to here to design and fabricate a book case that also served as sculpture.  The piece has two cantilevered shells split by a walnut shelf with embedded hardware that allows the attached bookends to slide and tighten down in order to hold the books on an angle.  The interior of the piece was patterned and pocketed to remove material to lighten the weight, then covered with  a semi-transparent acrylic inlay to allow just a  hint of the pattern to show through.

Coffee table with lamp and topographic ashtray slash planter designed for the Triumvirate exhibition series at Raid Projects in Los Angeles. The Table was based on a map of Antarctica supported by poodles. The ashtray was milled for Corian solid surface and the lamp was fabricated from a 3 dimensional scan of a kiwano fruit or horned melon. The machined lamp was dipped in tinted silicone RTV mold making material for it’s finish thus giving it a strange, tactile sensibility for when one might have to change the bulb.

This piece was made to do double duty as room divider and a sitting / waiting  area for a sushi bar in Beverly Hills.

This project was a response to the quality of materials used in the production of Ikeas’ furniture pieces. At first glance , some products seem nice but when once one begins to use them, they just don’t hold up to prolonged use, thus contributing to a disposable lifestyle. This table was taken from the Ikea showroom and stripped. Now, it sports nothing but clear shrink wrap.

Sheetrock is one of the basic building blocks of all interiors.  In this piece, we worked to transform this base construction material from wall to furniture. The sheets were cut, laminated and shaped into a surface to dine on.  The end result was coated in fiberglass and polished to a high gloss.  Sawhorse’s were  borrowed from the construction industry to create the original legs while later MDF and structural plywood became the pieces’ final stand.
